Interventional Cardiology

Interventional Cardiology

Interventional cardiology focuses on treating heart disease through methods that do not require open surgery, avoiding large cuts or incisions to the body. These procedures are deemed minimally invasive, as they utilize small incisions to access the interior of the body.

Similar to other tissues in the body, the heart requires oxygen-rich blood for proper functioning, and it is equally crucial to remove oxygen-depleted blood. Fulfilling both functions, the coronary arteries extend along the exterior of the heart, branching into its interior to deliver oxygenated blood and facilitate the removal of deoxygenated blood.

As the conduits responsible for supplying blood to the heart, any disorder or disease affecting the coronary arteries can have significant consequences, potentially causing a blockage that restricts the flow of oxygen and nutrients to the heart. This can result in a heart attack, and in severe cases, lead to death. The most prevalent cause of heart disease is atherosclerosis, characterized by the accumulation of plaque in the inner lining of arteries, causing narrowing or blockage.

DIAGNOSIS

Cardiologists employ state-of-the-art imaging equipment to detect potential blockages in the coronary arteries, which supply blood to the heart, using cardiac catheterization. Additionally, physicians utilize catheterization techniques to assess arteries in various parts of the body, including the arms, legs, and neck.

These interventions necessitate the insertion of small, thin, and flexible plastic tubes known as catheters into the blood vessels. These catheters are meticulously threaded through arteries to identify potential blockages. Through the assessment of coronary arteries (related to the heart) or peripheral arteries (in the neck, arms, or legs), doctors can formulate a treatment plan for addressing any identified blockages in the blood vessels.

Angioplasty, or percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), is a medical procedure involving the dilation of a narrowed segment in a coronary artery using a balloon catheter. Often, a stent is concurrently placed during the procedure. By employing these techniques, cardiologists can frequently attain outcomes comparable to more invasive approaches such as open-heart surgery, all while mitigating pain, reducing recovery time, and minimizing complications.
