Neurointerventions

Interventional neuroradiology is an emerging specialty focused on minimally invasive treatments for abnormalities affecting blood vessels in the brain and spine. Leveraging advanced cross-sectional and three-dimensional imaging, these procedures hold significant potential for enhancing diagnosis and improving clinical outcomes.

How are these procedures performed?

Administered under appropriate anesthesia, a minuscule, tube-like catheter is inserted into one of the limb arteries, typically located in the right groin region. With the guidance of x-ray technology, the catheter is navigated through the vascular system of the body, reaching the vessels that supply the brain and spine. This enables the introduction of dye into the blood vessels, allowing for the documentation of its flow to accurately diagnose abnormalities in the target organ vessels. Various specialized equipment can be introduced into the circulation through this method to address abnormal blood vessels.

These techniques facilitate the diagnosis and treatment of a comprehensive range of vascular stroke disorders. Procedures include intra-arterial thrombolysis for stroke, coil embolization of aneurysms, embolization of arterio-venous malformations and arterio-venous fistulae, as well as preoperative embolization of tumors in the neck and brain. Addressing vascular stenosis and blockages, the facility offers angioplasty and/or stenting of the carotid arteries, vertebral arteries, and intracranial arteries. Emergency treatment of epistaxis (nosebleeds) and head and neck vascular injuries is also available. The center provides treatment for vertebral compression fractures through vertebroplasty, significantly improving a patient’s comfort and level of activity. Other spine-related conditions are addressed with procedures such as epidural steroid injections, sacroiliac joint injections, facet joint injections, and selective nerve root blocks.

What are the benefits ?

Interventional neuroradiology techniques often grant access to regions of the brain and spine that may be challenging to reach through surgery. Due to their minimally invasive nature, these procedures typically result in shorter hospital stays and recovery periods. Moreover, they generally entail a lower risk of complications and infection.

Citi Neuro Centre's neuroradiology department is equipped with an advanced neurointerventional suite featuring 3D rotational angiography. This system facilitates digital subtraction angiography, allowing clear visualization of blood vessels in the brain, spine, and coronary areas without interference from bony or dense soft tissue environments.

3D rotational angiography produces images of a specific vessel as the camera rotates around the patient in a predefined arc. This enables the examination of the structure from multiple angles with a single injection of contrast medium. The result is an exquisitely detailed three-dimensional visualization of blood vessels, expediting more rapid and accurate clinical decisions when treating complex vascular abnormalities.
