Regenerative Orthopaedics

Regenerative Orthopaedics

Regenerative orthopaedics, a branch of regenerative medicine, is dedicated to promoting the regeneration of lost tissue, expediting healing, and providing pain relief for the treatment of various orthopaedic conditions. These conditions encompass osteoarthritis, tendonitis, low back pain, joint injuries, ligament injuries, sprains, and strains, among others.

  • Stem cells: Undifferentiated cells that can transform into any type of tissue. These are usually obtained from the bone marrow or fat.
  • Platelets: Platelets obtained from blood that help activate stem cells
  • Growth factors: Proteins obtained from blood that are essential for tissue repair and regeneration

Regenerative orthopaedics is effective in treating various common conditions, including osteoarthritis (degenerative arthritis), low back pain, strains and sprains, nerve injuries, as well as tendon and ligament tears.

Regenerative orthopaedics is employed to circumvent or postpone surgery, expedite healing following surgery or injury, or as an alternative when surgical or other therapeutic interventions prove unsuccessful. The recovery period after treatment is swift, allowing individuals to resume normal activities within 72 hours and return to sports within two weeks.

Blood comprises a liquid component called plasma and three primary solid components: red blood cells (RBCs), white blood cells (WBCs), and platelets. Platelets are crucial for blood clot formation and contain special proteins called growth factors that contribute to the body's healing process.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is characterized by a high concentration of platelets and plasma. In contrast to a regular blood specimen, which contains only 6% platelets, PRP comprises 94% platelets and boasts 5 to 10 times the concentration of growth factors present in normal blood, endowing it with enhanced healing properties.

PRP represents a relatively recent treatment approach for various orthopaedic conditions, including muscle, ligament, and tendon injuries, arthritis, and fractures. Administering PRP injections can effectively relieve painful symptoms, facilitate the healing process, and potentially postpone the need for joint replacement surgeries.
